National Vegetable Society presents 'Growing Apples and Pears in the Garden or Allotment' by Gerry Edwards FNVS

This should be an interesting talk and recommended .

Hatfield Peverel Village Hall, Hatfield Peverel, CM3 2HP On: On: Sunday 24th April 2016 at 2.00pm

Although a chartered surveyor by profession, Gerry has been involved in horticulture since 11 or 12 when his maternal grandfather taught him a huge amount about gardening. As his grandfather was Howard H. Crane (a very well-known
fruit grower, writer, exhibitor and judge), it was inevitable that Gerry might be involved in fruit growing himself which is exactly what happened. Gerry’s interest in horticulture became so great that he took a qualification in that subject as
well majoring on fruit and vegetable growing.

Gerry has exhibited fruit and vegetables very successfully for many years and the highlight was achieving ten consecutive Gold Medals for displays of apples and pears at the RHS Westminster October Show. Most of Gerry’s time
is now spent in judging, writing and giving talks on fruit growing. He has been an NVS judge for many years and judged at National Shows and is an RHS Fruit Judge and a trainer of fruit judges for the RHS. Gerry also acts as an RHS Advisor
on fruit growing and can be seen at most RHS Shows doing just this. We have personally known Gerry for many years now and have admired his delicious looking fruit exhibits at many RHS Shows atWestminster over the years.
Four years ago Gerry decided to leave his role as Director of Property for a London local authority and establish his own company restoring orchards around the country, giving advice to potential fruit growers and designing and planting
orchards. This is supplemented by writing for many magazines and websites and spending most days of the months of September, October and November acting as a national apple identifier. Come the end of November his family wonder
who this person turning up occasionally actually is!

As well as his passion for horticulture, Gerry is a lover of real ale and fortunately has the opportunity to try many types on his travels…
