Parsnips Grown in Toilet RollsParnips Growing in Toilet Rolls

When to sow

  • Outdoors March to April

How to sow Parsnips

  • Sow three seeds at 15cm (6in) intervals, 13mm (0.5in) deep in rows 30cm (12in) apart.
  • Although it is sometimes recommended to start sowing in February, this can lead to failure. Sowings made in March and April, and even early May, will do much better. Or warm the soil before sowing with cloches or similar; leave in place until the seedlings have developed two true leaves.
  • If your ground like mine is very stoney why not try filling used toilet rolls with compost and sowing 2-3 seeds per roll then transplant the whole roll just before the root gets to the bottom of the tube, I transplant the tube as well as this stops root shock and simply rots away in the ground!  Also if you leave a lip by not filling the tube to the brim this helps to stop carrot fly too.

Oca or Potato Homity Pie Recipe

Homity PieHomity Pie

Homity pie is a traditional British open vegetable pie. The pastry case traditionally contains a filling of potatoes and an onion and leek mixture, which is then covered with cheese.  It has a history that dates back to the efforts of the Land girls of the Second World War and the restrictions imposed by wartime rationing.

This simple aubergine parmigiana recipe from Italy makes a cosy mid-week meal. Serve this cheese, tomato and aubergine bake as a vegetarian main dish, with some wholewheat garlic bread or a peppery rocket salad, or you can also make it as a hearty side for for a meat dish.!

Jobs to do in August

Jobs to do in August

Harvest should be bountiful and the allotment is in full swing

August is the month of plenty, virtually everything you planted and sown will be giving you a crop, daily trips to the plot are recommended this month, harvesting, watering, and weeding all needing doing this month!

Jobs to do in April

Spring should be here but watch out for frosts!

Sow seed outdoors
Vegetable growing really takes off this month. Chit and plant out second early potatoes in the first half of the month, maincrop potatoes in the second half. It's also time to sow seed outdoors in well-prepared soil.

The Growing Season

The growing season

The Growing Season varies in different parts of the United Kingdom, but in Hatfield Peverel we are blessed with a milder climate and enjoy a longer season than many parts of the country.

In this section of the web site I have tried to separate the season out into monthly sections to help and guide you through the most popular tasks and crops regularly grown on the allotment site, but if you would like a feature made of a particular vegetable or task, please get in touch and I will do my best to add it to the web site for you.
